Is Russia preparing for a ground invasion of Syria?

There are rumors saying Russia has already deployed ground troops in Syria helping the Syrian army in operations against ISIS militants

Russia is ready to coordinate a set of measures in cooperation with Syria’s government, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after meeting with Syrian counterpart Valid Muallim.

But, how this could be achieved? There are rumors saying Russia has already deployed ground troops in Syria helping the Syrian army in operations against ISIS militants and the opposition forces of Bashar al-Assad. The German magazine Der Spiegel reported that Russia has also deployed its artillery forces, but the Russian military is commanded not to confirm anything.

“We support it. We are open for the coordination of practical steps, of course, in consultation with the Syrian government. We are convinced that closing the borders in many points will eliminate terrorism in Syrian territory” Mr. Lavrov stated.

At the same time, many questions have been raised following the Russian government’s statement that all terrorists in the area where the Russian jet was shot down have been killed. How can Russia know such things?

As it was stated, the Syrian army conducted an operation with the support of Hezbollah and Iranian commandos. Given the fact that Syrian army has been weakened due to the chronic war involved in, foreign analysts have expressed their doubts on whether they acted alone or they were aasisted by Russian ground forces.

All the above reinforce the scenario of Russia’s ground invasion with analysts claiming that Russia will begin an invasion. The question that arises, though, is whether the invasion has already begun or it is about to begin in the near future.
