Comedian could face up to 3 years in prison under German law

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has granted Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan request a legal inquiry and a possible prosecution against German TV comedian Jan Boehmermann for writing and performing a poem that the Turkish President took offence to. “Turkey has demanded prosecution of Jan Boehmermann. [The] German government, in accordance with established practice, studied the note; this process involved the Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Office of the Federal Chancellor. As a result, the federal government in regard to this incident, satisfies the request,” Merkel told reporters at the Chancellery in Berlin. German law allows the imprisonment of individuals judged to have offended a head of a foreign state of up to 3 years. Merkel said the matter had divided the political world in Germany, adding that she would recommend an amendment to the current German penal code, Erdogan used to go after Jan Boehmermann.
