Youtube and social media are abuzz with famous stars, athletes, highly-paid computer geeks to ordinary people taking part in the ALS Ice Bucket challenge to raise money and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. One video that stood out was that of Fotoula’s yiayia (grandmother).
The Greek-American yiayia from Atlanta, Georgia, joined critics who believe that the challenge is “silly” but did it anyway for a good cause. She looked terrified and called on the Holy Mother for protection but particularly enjoyed nominating others…

ALS Association Barbara Newhouse is pleased with the campaign’s phenomenal results. “We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease… We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative,” she said.
