The Greeks of TIME (see photos)

Thirteen Greek-interest stories that have made their way to TIME magazine covers through the weekly's 90-year history.

Newsroom October 16 07:19

A number of cover stories of Greek interest have been featured on TIME magazine over its 90-year history. Here are some portraits of distinguished Greeks that have captured the international spotlight and have made it to the cover of the iconic weekly.

Former Greek prime minister Eleftherios Venizelos was featured on the 9th issue, published on February 18 1924, just a few days after his government fell following the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

16 years after the cover featuring Venizelos, the country dominated the magazine again on November 4, 1940. Greece had just entered the war with Italy and Time featured George II of Greece in his official costume.

George II was once again a cover story for the magazine on February 24, 1947, when he returned to Greece following a referendum.

General Alexandros Papagos on December 16, 1940, when the Greek army battled at the Albanian mountains. “All free peoples are deeply impressed by the courage and steadfastness of the Greek nation,” Franklin Roosevelt had said.

Archbishop Damaskinos on October 1, 1945, shortly before becoming Greece’s temporary prime minister prior to the start of the Greek Civil War.

Markos Vafeiadis, chief of the resistance movement, on April 5, 1948, in front of a column in the Corinthian rhythm just as the Civil War is at its peak.

Queen Frederika of Greece on October 26, 1953.

King Constantine on April 28, 1967, just seven days following the General’s coup. His gaze is vague and nothing about him shows decisiveness.

Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos was called one of the “New Giants on the Sea Lanes” on the issue of August 6, 1956.

Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy on October 25, 1968, five days following their wedding ceremony.

Great soprano Maria Callas was featured on the magazine on October 29, 1956, just two days after her performance as Norma at the Metropolitan Opera.

George Koskotas, the former banker and publisher who spearheaded a financial scandal that brought down the socialist PASOK government in 1989, was featured on the cover of Time on March 1989 in a dedication titled “The Looting of Greece.”

Isn’t it about time for a new TIME cover? Who would be worthy enough? How about Loukanikos, the riot dog?
