A young Tibetan died after she set herself on fire in China to “protest against the repressive policy” of Beijing against the religion and culture of her minority, according to media and an NGO based outside China.
This is the second self-immolation of a member of the minority which becomes known within a week. A 33 year old man died last Tuesday, succumbing to burns suffered when he set himself on fire in a mostly Tibetan area, as protest.
Police and authorities have not responded to AFP’s questions when they sought a representative for comments.
Over 130 Tibetans have set themselves on fire or have attempted to do so since 2009, to protest against the political repression over their religion and culture.
The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of the Tibetans and a “black-sheep” for Beijing which in turn accuses him of seeking Tibetan separation from China, has characterized the self-immolations as acts of desperation which cannot be prevented.
