Jailed members of terror gang “Conspiracy of Cells of Fire” were allegedly planning to assassinate convicted 17N terrorist Christodoulos Xiros, according to information released on Thursday by the Greek police.
According to high-ranking police chief Dimitris Tsaknakis, members of the terror group decided to assassinate Xiros after escaping from Korydallos Prison, located in the greater Athens area near the port of Piraeus.
The police statement was based on evidence collected by the counter-terrorism squad as part of a probe into a major extortion ring run out of the prison, a case that generated several arrests last week. Jailed members of the “Conspiracy of Cells of Fire” gang were allegedly involved in the underworld network, according to police, who cited recorded telephone conversations.
Lt-Gen. Tsaknakis said the “coded” messages exchanged by the members of the group referred to the “dismissal” of Xiros, who was considered a “useless traitor.”
Specifically, the younger urban terrorists believed Xiros responsible for the intercepted mail bombs addressed to the Itea police station and the Korydallos district’s tax office.
Moreover, police claim that 22-year-old “Aggeliki”, a suspected member of the terror group, was reportedly growing impatient with Xiros “incompetence”.
In one of her messages to the jailed terrorists, she relates: “Tolerating him is very difficult. When the job is done I will break his head.”
