SYRIZA govt plans to ditch police sweeps based on illegal migrant profiling

Operation Xenios Zeus sweeps were named after the ancient Greek god of hospitality by someone with a black sense of humor

Newsroom February 5 10:39

Alternate Immigration Policy Minister Tasia Christodoulopoulou, a lawyer and activist, plans to ditch the controversial Operation Xenios Zeus police sweeps based on racial profiling. These operations aimed at cracking down on irregular immigrants entering and residing in the country. The operation led to tens of thousands of non-natives being stopped, searched, detained, even abused by the police.

Not only will police no longer be conducting raids aimed at clamping down on irregular immigration, but the new Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government intends to replace Greece’s detention centers. The European Court of Human Rights and international bodies have already condemned Greece for the conditions at these centers and the degrading treatment of those who are detained.
