Speaking to German reporters after a Eurogroup session on Monday, Schaeuble referred to Greece’s finance minister as “foolishly naive” in matters of communication.

Foreign ministry officials were asked by Proto Thema if Schaeuble called Varoufakis “naively silly” or “suddenly naive”. The latter translation was provided by the New York Times. The Forieign Ministry believes that, either way, the comments were derogatory within the context in which they were expressed.
