Grexit took on a whole other meaning on Saturday evening, as the Greek national football team was essentially eliminated from qualification for next year’s European Cup in France after losing 2-1 to the … Faroes Island squad.
That’s right, the Greek team’s high-priced professionals — many of whom play in Europe’s top leagues – lost for a second time to a fine team comprised of football amateurs on the pitch, but professional working men on weekdays, i.e. fishermen, carpenters etc.
The loss was the second in the qualifying round to the mighty Faroese, as the Greek “team” lost 1-0 at home a few months ago.
No “political solution”, no amount of negotiations or ‘alternative proposals’ will reverse what’s now the greatest humiliation for the national men’s football team, nearly 11 years after it was crowned European champions.
As many a snide headline read in Sunday’s Greek press, it’s now “Mykonos time” for the club’s hipster-tainted pro players.
