The Turkish consulate in Komotini is calling on members of the Muslim minority in Greece’s northeastern Thrace province to vote … ‘no’ in Sunday’s referendum!

According to the Athens daily “Vima”, the “initiative” was spearheaded by Hussein Zeibek, an MP for leftist SYRIZA, who was reportedly in contact with the Turkish consulate in Komotini regarding the referendum.

According to reports, after an initial first meeting, the SYRIZA MP called on the Turkish consul to actively campaign in favor of the “no”, in a bid to sway the region’s Muslims.

Other meetings took place with the other two minority MPs of the region, Ayhan Karayiousouf adn Mustafa Mustafa.
The result was a joint announcement — in Turkish — by the three deputies, posted on Zeibek’s Facebook page, calling on the Muslim minority to vote “no”.

The development led to at least one condemnation by a government official, Terenc Quick, from the right-of-centre Independent Greeks party.
