Combative Parliament President Zoe Konstantopoulou on Saturday mostly confirmed her split from radical leftist SYRIZA, the ruling party in the moribund coalition Greek government, during a meeting with Panagiotis Lafazanis, who has emerged as the leader of an anti-bailout and far-left party from the SYRIZA breakup.
Konstantopoulou was equally critical of the both and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos over the recent decision by PM Alexis Tsipras to tender his government’s resignation in order to hold snap elections. The latter earned Konstantopoulou’s ire for his “secret” granting of mandates to form a government from the current parliament.
She also accused Tsipras and his government of taking the decision without consultation with party cadres, but with prior briefing of creditors.
The meeting between the two lawmakers, described as very “positive”, heightened speculation that Konstantopoulou will join up to 30 SYRIZA MPs that will switch to Lafazanis’ newly formed Popular Unity party, which beyond a categorical opposition to bailout conditions, is characterized by a mostly anti-capitalist, radical communist and euro-skeptic agenda. Many of the new party’s top cadres have also repeatedly stated that Greece’s presence in the euro zone is not a “taboo issue”.
What’s certain is that Konstantopoulou will not stand again for Parliament in a SYRIZA party headed by Tsipras.
