Police are investigating the circumstances of the death of the publisher of Greek newspaper ‘Acropolis’, Panayiotis Mavrikos, who died when the car he was driving caught fire, and whether it was a foul play.

Before the tragic accident, Mavrikos had a meeting in Maroussi where he had parked his car for about 60 minutes before the accident. Using footages from security cameras of the buildings in the area, analysts of Greek police are trying to see whether there were suspicious activities near Mavrikos’ car.

Meanwhile, the forensics are examining the vehicle to find out if there are any traces which could determine the cause of ignition, and whether there is any evidence of firebomb.

Police are waiting to receive the first results from the toxicology tests to determine the cause of the death.

Mavrikos has been arrested a few months ago along with two journalists in his newspaper “Acropolis” on charges of blackmailing executives in public organizations, companies and banks and embezzling the Greek state. He had been released on bail pending trail.
