For the first time in the history of the Emmys, Netflix topped the rankings for the most wins at the television industry’s biggest annual award show. The online streaming service was tied with HBO in first place, with both companies winning 23 awards in total.
When Netflix earned its first Emmy nominations in 2013, it went into the award show as a dark horse. The fact that the company ended up winning three awards for “House of Cards” that year was groundbreaking, as it was the first time that an online exclusive won television’s biggest prize.
Over the past five years, however, Netflix has become a regular at the prestigious award show, upstaging many traditional television networks. With 112 nominations, the streaming giant got the most nods of any TV network or online platform this year, breaking HBO’s 17-year streak of taking that honor.
