The incident happened last Friday when the female tourist left her clothes on the monument, which pays tribute to Italy’s war heroes, swam in the icy lagoon and then stood next to the statue of a murdered female resistant fighter and posed for a photo. The incident led to her being fined 450 euros by the city’s authorities while she was banned from entering Venice for 48 hours.

City resident Mario Nason was walking with his son when he saw the woman and her two friends at the monument, which is right next to the water and is dedicated to the women who gave their lives in the struggle against fascism. It is a bronze statue of a murdered female fighter.

The monument near the Biennale Gardens is one of the relatively few statues in Italy dedicated to women.
