Greece’s top mountaineer Antonis Sykaris died on Mount Dhaulagiri which belongs to the Himalayas mountain range in Nepal.
Sykaris, 60, died while descending the mountain.
The experienced climber was at an altitude of 7,400 metres but at 4:00 in the morning Nepal time passed away after great physical and mental stress from a lack of oxygen.
Antonis Sykaris was considered the top mountaineer and alpinist of Greece since he was the only one who had managed to successfully climb 5 of the 14 peaks above 8,000 m in the world. The experienced climber died while trying to conquer the 8,167-meter peak of Dhaulagiri in Nepal.
This is the 8th highest peak in the world which the Greek climbers call the “mountain of the Greeks”, since before Antonis Sykaris a total of five Greek attempts were made, without success.
In fact, in 1998, climbers Nikos Papandreou and Babis Tsoupras lost their lives there.
