Earthquake: damage in Zacharo after the 5.7 Richter – Problems in the Municipality of Andritsaina-Krestena

Cracks in buildings, collapsed old stone walls in Zacharo

The Municipality of Zacharo was the most affected by the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Friday morning (29/3) with an epicentre 17 km east – southeast of Strophades.

In particular, according to patrisnews, the stadium of Zacharo was damaged (there are cracks in the walls of the grandstand and the changing rooms), old buildings and bridges, while some old walls collapsed.

“According to the first checks made by our crews, damage to the stadium facilities has been recorded” noted Mayor Costas Mitropoulos, adding that “they will be closed for a few days for protection reasons. However, there will be a second inspection at the stadium to draw more reliable conclusions about the extent of the damage”.

It is underlined that until the inspections are completed, only the athletics area and the football stadium will be open.

Furthermore, the mayor of Zacharo said that “cracks have been recorded on old bridges and old houses, as well as on the walls of houses within the town of Zacharo”.

However, as he pointed out, “a comprehensive picture of the damage will be available when the inspections by the engineering teams are completed”.

Earlier, the Municipality of Zacharo after the earthquake that occurred in the area, in a statement informed that engineering teams carried out inspections of schools and assembly areas for the safety of students and citizens. No serious damage has been reported so far.

“Citizens are asked to check their homes and if they find any material damage caused by the earthquake, please inform the Civil Protection Department of our municipality at the following numbers: 2625360301-317.

We also inform parents that the Schools, the Day Care Center and the Day Care Center of the Municipality of Zacharo, suspend their operation for today, Friday, March 29, 2024. We urge citizens to remain calm.

“The greatest damage has been done to the Cultural Centre of the community and we have already taken all the necessary steps to ensure that there is not the slightest danger for our fellow citizens,” said Mr. Zogogogiannis.
