As shared ‘Topetmou’ magazine, the professional diver and head of the Environmental Awareness Department of the Cultural & Cultural Association ‘To Aitoliko’, Mr. Lambros Harelos, the pair has been observed in the area for more than 10 years.
In the last 3 years, in fact, it has been breeding with great success. Last year they had 5 cygnets which have now grown, while this year they have displayed 7 cygnets.
In previous years they have had less success – sometimes 2, and there have been years when they have displayed 1 and only one.
The area is part of the European natura 2000 network and is monitored daily by the National Park Management Unit of Messolonghi National Park.
Swans often form monogamous relationships that last for many years and, in some cases, can last for a lifetime. Their loyalty and devotion to their partner makes these birds so popular, to the extent that the image of two swans swimming together with their necks forming a heart is an almost universal image symbolising love and affection.
Of course, the reasons why many birds mate for life are not always as romantic as they might seem at first glance. Just think of the time it takes many birds to migrate, establish their territory, incubate eggs and raise their young. It follows, then, that there is not so much time left for courtship.
As we read in the description of the page of the Environmental Awareness Department of the Cultural and Cultural Association ‘To Aitoliko’, this voluntary initiative aims to promote the natural environment of this place.
The actions that have taken place so far include the cleaning of the ‘Limanaki’ (small port) site in Aitoliko, the creation of an Environmental Park/Wild Bird Sanctuary, which hosts more than 100 birds, among which there are rare species, as well as birdwatching.
