Turkey: Military uses only domestic communication systems following deadly explosions in Lebanon

Authorities are reportedly reviewing security measures in light of recent events in Lebanon and the war in Ukraine

Newsroom September 19 04:31

According to military sources cited by hurriyetdailynews.com, the Turkish armed forces now use only communication systems and software developed and manufactured in Turkey. This decision follows the explosion of hundreds of electronic devices in Lebanon.

“In case of any third-party involvement in the production process, we have implemented additional, detailed control mechanisms in the supply and production process,” military sources stated on September 19.

Over two days, beepers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah exploded, injuring or disabling some fighters and maiming civilians connected to the group’s social branches. More than 32 people were killed in the attacks, including two children, and over 3,000 others were injured. The device explosions are reportedly part of a months-long Israeli operation against Hezbollah members.

The sources also indicated that authorities are reassessing security measures in response to recent developments in Lebanon and the ongoing war in Ukraine. “The Turkish armed forces have become significantly stronger in recent years, thanks to the support of Turkish engineers in communication, information systems, electronic mechanisms, and cyber fields,” they said. “As the Ministry of Defense, we are conducting the necessary investigations into this specific incident,” the statement continued.
