The head of the Freedom Party and former Albanian president, Ilir Mehta, has been arrested. Meta’s arrest comes on the orders of the SPAK (anti-corruption body) and he is accused of corruption.
The former Albanian president is accused of three counts of corruption and failure to declare assets, according to top-channel.tv. Reports say he is also accused of money laundering.
Mehta has said he has never been involved in any of the property or financial matters he has been accused of.
Ilir Mehta had announced a press conference at 1:40 p.m., apparently knowing of his impending arrest, but police authorities arrested him before the interview began.
He resisted arrest
Meanwhile, Top Channel has published a video documentary of the former president’s arrest, the moment he is being handcuffed by police forces.
In the video, the video depicts armored police officers having opened the doors of the vehicle while Mehta and his driver put up resistance. Eventually the police officers forcibly removed the former president from the car and put him in the police car.
