Bad weather: 125 mm of rain expected to fall in 7 hours in Thessaly

The Civil Protection of Thessaly estimates that the eastern part of Mount Pilion will be the most severely affected

Newsroom November 15 02:54

The Alexandros storm has begun its advance with heavy rainfall and frequent lightning, primarily in Athens, but it is expected to affect other areas in the coming hours.

According to the latest forecasts, Thessaly is expected to experience significant rainfall, especially in areas like Mount Pilion and Skiathos. The heaviest rainfall is expected between Friday night and Saturday morning. The Civil Protection of Thessaly has estimated that approximately 125 mm of rain will fall in the eastern Pilion area within 7 hours. The Almyros region and the coastal areas of Larissa are also expected to be affected.

Due to the intense rain and strong winds expected today, Thessaly’s Regional Governor, Dimitris Koureta, convened an emergency meeting of the Regional Civil Protection Coordination Committee early this morning. He has put the region’s services and the relevant agencies on alert.

Kikilias: Heavy rain and storms expected across most of the country

The Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, has made urgent announcements regarding the upcoming weather, following the release of a dangerous weather phenomena warning by the Hellenic Meteorological Service (EMY).

Kikilias stated that, according to the scientific committee’s risk assessment, strong rainfall and local thunderstorms will affect most parts of Greece from today, Friday, through to late Saturday night. He warned that Thessaly, the Northern Sporades, Evia, and Fthiotida would be the most at risk, where flooding is possible due to heavy rain and strong northeastern winds.

Additionally, strong storms and rainfall are forecast for Saturday in the eastern and southern islands of Greece, particularly the eastern Aegean and Dodecanese. The Athens area will also experience rain and storms starting late this afternoon and especially during the evening hours.

Authorities are advising the public in these affected areas to remain alert and follow any instructions from the authorities if necessary.
