Reports from US media, citing people with knowledge of the investigations, suggest a targeted attack.
According to the police report, 50-year-old Brian Thompson was shot shortly after 6:45 a.m. (local time) on Sixth Avenue, specifically at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel, and was taken to Mount Sinai West Hospital in critical condition.
The suspect is wanted
Officers are still searching for the suspect, who fled east on foot along 6th Avenue. He was wearing a cream-colored jacket, a black face mas,k and a gray backpack.
Police believe Thompson was the target of the attack, which occurred during the insurance company’s annual conference for investors in New York City.
Thompson had arrived early at the conference site to prepare. The gunman knew which door he would enter through and shot him several times from a distance of only three feet. He then got on a bicycle, witnesses say, and fled.
Shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, just outside the hotel entrance, a section of the road was closed. However, the internal operations of the hotel continued as normal.
Thompson was promoted to CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.
