Alexis Patelis announced his resignation through his Facebook account, stating he will stay on as head of the Prime Minister’s Economic Office until the end of the year.
Sources close to the Prime Minister’s advisor mentioned that Patelis took on his role during a time when the Greek economy was in dire straits. Now, with the economy on a different trajectory, Patelis feels he has completed his cycle in this position. In his post, he explains that he will remain in office until December 31, with his successor to be announced soon.
According to reports, Patelis has not lined up a new position for the future. However, his first plan for the new year is to take a vacation.
“I informed the Prime Minister of my intention—after five years—to complete my tenure at the end of the year in the Presidency of the Government. I want to thank everyone I have worked with, but above all, I express my deep gratitude for the trust the Prime Minister placed in me and for the honor of contributing to the collective government effort to the best of my ability,” he stated in his post. He also highlighted that, while the country still has challenges ahead, economic growth is now more than double the European average. Reforms implemented have resulted in lower unemployment, significant debt reduction, increased investment, and regained international credibility. “2025 is a far cry from 2019,” he remarked.
“Our country has enormous potential, and under the leadership of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the nation is steadily advancing toward a better future for all,” he concluded in his post.
Alexis Patelis’ Full Statement:
“Five and a half years ago, the Prime Minister extended the extraordinary honor of inviting me to head his Economic Office.
In 2019, our country was still under capital controls. The most significant economic achievement of this government is the restoration of investment-grade status and stability. This milestone marks the reestablishment of our country’s credibility, rapid growth, and opportunities.
Coming from a long career in the private sector, I was given the chance to serve my country—a privilege for which I will forever be grateful.
I have informed the Prime Minister of my intention—after five years—to conclude my work at the Presidency of the Government at the end of the year.
I wish to thank everyone I worked with, but above all, I express my deep appreciation for the trust placed in me by the Prime Minister and for the honor of contributing to the collective governmental effort within the scope of my abilities.
Though there is still a way to go, economic growth is now over twice the European average. Reforms implemented have led to reduced unemployment, a significant drop in debt, increased investment, and regained credibility abroad. 2025 is vastly different from 2019.
Our homeland has immense potential, and under Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ leadership, the country is steadily moving toward a brighter future for all.”
