Brazilian President Louis Inácio Lula da Silva will undergo a second surgery today (Thursday), following the first one he underwent as an emergency for a brain hematoma.
Lula, 79, remains in the intensive care unit of São Paulo’s Sírio-Libanês hospital and will undergo an embolization of the median meningeal artery, according to the medical release.
The attending physicians also reported that Lula did not present any postoperative complications in the first 24 hours, was undergoing physiotherapy and was visited by family members.
The hematoma for which Lula was operated on was the result of a fall the Brazilian president had about two months ago in his home. On Monday night, while talking with congressional leaders in Brasilia, Lula complained of a severe headache that worsened and was taken for tests at a nearby hospital, said his spokesman, Paulo Pimenta. An MRI scan showed intracranial bleeding and Lula was flown to São Paulo to undergo emergency surgery.
