Olympiakos bids farewell to 2024 at the top – PAOK is -1, Panathinaikos is -2, AEK drops to 4th

Olympiakos continues to lead the Super League 1, but there is now a shift in the positions below them. AEK escaped defeat in injury time (1-1 against Levadiakos), but they have now dropped to 4th place, behind PAOK (3-0 against Atromitos) and Panathinaikos (1-0 against Athens Kallithea)

Newsroom December 23 09:58

The 16th matchday, the final one for 2024, will conclude on Monday, December 23rd with two matches, but the results of Asteras Tripolis – Aris and OFI – Volos will not affect the situation at the top of Super League 1.

Olympiakos (34 points) will usher in the new year at the top after a tense win over Lamia on Saturday night, but will still feel the hot breath of PAOK (33 points) and Panathinaikos (32 points) on their necks. Both PAOK and Panathinaikos won their final matches of the year, while AEK is now 3 points behind after drawing 1-1 with Levadiakos at the OPAP Arena.

PAOK – Atromitos 3-0
After winning 7-1 against Aigaleo in the Cup and 5-0 against Ferencvaros in Europe, PAOK broke the curse of Toumba and triumphed 3-0 against Atromitos in the league.

Watch the goals and highlights here.

Atromitos were reduced to 10 men in the 20th minute after Athanasiou was sent off (for hitting Schwab with his studs), and PAOK scored the first goal in injury time of the first half. A second shock came in the 49th minute with a 2-0 goal from Zivkovic (following a deflection), and the match was sealed in the 59th minute. Atromitos were awarded a penalty after a VAR review, but Kotarski saved from Ouarda, and in the 90th minute (via VAR), Kamara made it 3-0.

Panathinaikos – Athens Kallithea
For 82 minutes, Panathinaikos lived with the nightmare of a second loss to Athens Kallithea, who played with 10 men from the 33rd minute (Mutinio was sent off with a second yellow card), defending in numbers. However, in another match, Alexander Yeremeyev played the role of… savior and gave the three points to Panathinaikos.

A cross from Maximovits, a header from Yeremeyev, and another last-minute goal from the Swede gave Panathinaikos a 1-0 win, extending their winning streak to three in a row.

AEK – Levadiakos 1-1
After Karaiskaki, Levadiakos caused trouble again at the OPAP Arena… And while against Olympiakos they had to overturn a 2-0 deficit, today they managed to keep AEK scoreless and shock the hosts when Pentesros converted a penalty in the 57th minute that he won himself.

AEK’s attacking monologue continued until the end with Almeida throwing in all the attacking players he had, but after watching his team miss several chances, the solution came (as it did in Lamia) from Simos Mitoglou, who equalized 1-1 in the 90+4th minute. A draw that felt like a loss as AEK dropped to 4th place, now 3 points behind the top.

Olympiakos – Lamia 1-0
Olympiakos closed 2024 with a win. Despite not playing well, the Piraeus team won 1-0 at home against Lamia, who remain at the bottom of the table.

Lamia had two good chances in the first few minutes, but Tzolakis kept Olympiakos’ goal safe with his saves, and José Luis Mendilibar made a substitution in the 26th minute, bringing on Karmo, later stating that the first 25 minutes were a disgrace for his team.

In the 45+1′, Rodinei passed to Martins, who crossed to El Kaabi in the box, and he slotted the ball home. However, the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.

The only goal of the match came in the 64th minute, with Martins scoring from a pass by Kostinja.

Panserraikos – Panetolikos 0-0
A first half that would put you to sleep, followed by a second half with more rhythm and chances, but no goals, as both teams shared good holiday wishes.

Watch the highlights here.

In the first 45 minutes, the teams were cautious, and there were few attempts on goal, but none that could be considered real chances.

However, in the second half, the game opened up. Both teams created chances, but Guggesasvili and Chaves kept the score at 0-0 until the final whistle.
