Pitsilis highlights five key interventions by Hellenic Tax Administration to combat tax evasion at OECD

The interventions have helped us to drastically reduce the VAT gap, from almost 30% in 2017 to 13.7% in 2022, said the Governor of the Hellenic Tax Administration

Newsroom January 17 08:00

The ongoing direction of the ADA in enhancing tax accountability and improving the overall taxpayer experience through a shift to modern technological solutions was outlined by the Governor of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue, Giorgos Pitsilis, speaking at the 99th OECD Summit on Fiscal Issues.

Pitsilis referred to the projects undertaken by the Authority to ensure the smooth operation of the continuous monitoring system for transactions. These are:

– The myDATA, through which, in four years, transactions worth 3.5 trillion euros have been declared by almost all companies based in Greece.

– The interconnection of POS with cash registers.

– The mandatory digital invoicing.

– The digitalization of delivery notes, to monitor everything that is transported within the Greek territory.

– The pre-completion of VAT and income tax returns. As of December 2022, more than 15 million returns have been pre-filled with all the information in real-time, received through the continuous transaction monitoring system.

As Pitsilis said, “All this has helped us to drastically reduce the VAT gap, from almost 30% in 2017 to 13.7% in 2022. Most important, however, is the implementation of a ‘compliance by design’ strategy that provides us with tools for proactive compliance, predictive analysis, and more targeted controls. Always in the spirit of the OECD, for Tax Administration 3.0.”
