Newsroom January 21 04:45

Nikitas Kaklamanis is anticipated to be elected as the new President of the Hellenic Parliament with an overwhelming majority that could reach up to 248 votes. The election will take place in the Plenary Session on Wednesday, January 22, at 12:00.

According to official positions of the parliamentary parties, Kaklamanis’ candidacy will be supported by New Democracy, PASOK, Hellenic Solution, and Spartans. SYRIZA is also leaning toward a positive vote, although final decisions will be made by its parliamentary presidium, which is set to convene today at 16:30.

Additionally, former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and independent MPs such as Marios Salmas, Athina Linou, Evangelos Apostolakis, Pavlos Sarakis, Haris Katsivardas, Michalis Chourdakis, Areti Papaioannou, Petros Pappas, Burhan Baran, Yiannis Sarakiotis, Rania Thraskia, Theodora Tzakri, Alexandros Avlonitis, Kyriaki Malama, Rallia Christidou, and Yiota Poulou are expected to vote in favor.

On the other hand, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) will maintain its traditional stance in such procedures and declare “present” (abstaining from voting in favor or against). Similarly, “present” votes will be cast by New Left, Niki, Plefsi Eleftherias (Course of Freedom), and independent MPs Giorgos Manousos, Yiannis Dimitrokallis, Dionysis Valtogiannis, and Kostas Floros.

It is worth noting that in the election processes for both the President of the Parliament and the President of the Republic, MPs are limited to the options of voting “yes” or “present.”
