Strict, flawless, and as cold as an ice cube looked Melania Trump under her Eric Javits hat in My Fair Lady at the White House’s inaugural dance at her husband Donald Trump.
When the president leaned in close to her as they danced, Melania, 54, looked tense and seemed to be trying to enjoy the moment.
Behind that icy stare is a change in the way Melania intends to handle her second term in the White House. As Kate Andersen Brower, author and First Lady historian, says: “She will be Melania 2.0 in the same way that Trump 2.0 is: “She will be much more confident in the White House and in her role.”
And so, as the 78-year-old Trump begins his second term making a splash, Melania seems to be more assertive and more focused.
The US First Lady (for the second time) moves into the White House with a film crew at her side, something that would have been unthinkable for any of her predecessors.
But Melania, who literally looks like a sphinx and rarely opens her heart, is about to reveal all in a documentary about her life.
Filming of the interviews and general footage began last November, during the latter stages of the campaign and while she was still at Trump’s Florida base, Mar-a-Lago.
The documentary will be released later this year on Amazon Prime, whose boss, Jeff Bezos, was among the tech titans who “took a knee” before Trump. He has even set aside an astronomical $40 million for the rights to the documentary.
Much of that amount will reportedly go into Melania’s pocket as she works as a producer.
Why Melania would want to start her second term as First Lady with such an obvious attempt to both raise her public profile and enrich herself is of great interest. Political analysts wonder if Melania has divorce in the back of her mind when she leaves the White House or if she just likes to make money.
Brower believes it’s just the latter and said: “You don’t get paid as First Lady. No section in the Constitution describes her role. Michelle Obama quit her job and wasn’t making any money. In a way, by commodifying that position, she is degrading it. But Melania has “trivialized” the role of First Lady. This is greed we’ve never seen before. She is recreating her role. We see it in her fashion choices, in her cryptocurrency, in her book. She’s more public than she was, but she’s going to do it on her terms.”
Brower also said how Melania is interested in “White House history” and how she is “in touch with the White House Historical Association and a big fan of Jackie Kennedy.”
He added: “It’s not that she doesn’t understand her role, but I think she’s taken the view that she doesn’t have to make everybody happy. There’s a sense that if anyone is going to make money off her name, it’s going to be her… There’s a sense that they go after people who make a dime writing about them (like former assistants Stephanie Winston Wolkoff and Stephanie Grisham) because all that money should be theirs.”
The First Lady is as steely as her husband. But unlike her first time when Melania seemed cold at her husband’s side at public events, Ms. Brower believes Melania will be different this time.
“We will see her standing by his side because of the ‘trauma’ of the assassination attempts. This shook her world, as it would happen to anyone. The first time we saw her push her husband’s hand away. Indeed, during this term, Melania has already said that she will move fully into the White House.”
In the first term, she lived in New York while her son Barron, now 18, was in school. Melania has insisted that Barron’s education should not be interrupted, even though the cost of flights and security reportedly amounted to $125,000 a day. He is now attending university. But her stubbornness continues to burn brightly, as Melania told Fox News last week: “I just feel like people didn’t accept me, maybe. Some people, just see me as the president’s wife, but I stand on my own two feet, independent. I have my thoughts.”
One can’t help but wonder, who will be the more unpredictable Trump in the White House this time around: the president or his wife?
