Alexandroupoli: The Coast Guard arrests 55-year-old Turk with 61 weapons and nearly 3,000 rounds of ammunition

A 55-year-old Turkish national was arrested in Alexandroupoli for importing, smuggling, transporting, possessing, and storing weapons and ammunition with the intent to distribute them to third parties for the commission of felonies.

After a search of his boat by the Coast Guard, authorities found 61 weapons of various calibers and types (handguns, pistols, revolvers, silencers, and more), along with various accessories, as well as 2,916 rounds of ammunition of different calibers and types, some of which were suitable for military use.

At noon on Tuesday, January 28, the Alexandroupoli Port Authority was informed that a motorized boat carrying a foreign national was drifting unmanned in the sea area of Alexandroupoli. A Coast Guard patrol boat approached the location and rescued the foreigner, safely bringing him ashore at the port.

Upon checking his documents, authorities confirmed that he was a 55-year-old Turkish national who had been reported missing in the SIRENE SIS database.

The 55-year-old was transferred to the University General Hospital of Evros, where he remains under guard for medical care.

The seized weapons, as well as the suspect’s boat, which has been hauled out of the water, have been confiscated for further investigation and forensic examination.
