The dog of the 25-year-old Turkish man who lost his life after being shot in Exarchia is now under the care of the Athens Municipal Shelter. The small Pomeranian had accompanied its owner at the time of the attack and remained next to him even after his fatal injury.
The 25-year-old had gone out for a walk with his pet when he was hit by the gunfire that cost him his life. After the incident, the dog took shelter under the man’s arm and refused to leave the scene. Residents of the area as well as police officers attempted to approach it, but it remained beside its owner. According to reports, some citizens also expressed interest in adopting it.
Following a prosecutor’s order, the Hellenic Police handed the animal over to the Athens Municipal Shelter, where it is being temporarily hosted.
Speaking to ANT1, the Deputy Mayor for Social Solidarity and Urban Fauna and Animal Welfare of the Municipality of Athens, Mina Fountzoula, stated that the dog was not microchipped and will undergo the necessary veterinary examinations. “It will be examined by our veterinarians, it will go to DIKEPAZ, it will be chipped, vaccinated. It is about six years old. It will return here, where we will await the prosecutor’s order on what we will do,” she said.
