Kefalonia was hit by severe bad weather that resulted in tons of mud covering parts of the island, becoming population slides, and parents trapped with their children in their cars. The mayor of Argostoli, Theophilos Michalatos, requested to re-declare the municipality in a state of emergency.
Mr. Michalatos, in his statement, said that “the Regional Unit of Kefallinia is still in a state of emergency (APA P3I546NPITH-8FG), except the Community of Nifios and the District of Pylaros, to complete the management of the problems caused by severe weather phenomena called Janos”, however, asks that the municipality be re-declared in a state of emergency “and that the state mechanism moves as provided by the Civil Protection in extreme weather conditions”.
Southern Kefalonia, centered on the area of Livato, was faced with heavy rainfall. The most significant problems were detected in Poro, Karousa, Vlahata, and Peratata.
In the plain of Peratata, in the area of the Monastery of St. Andrew Milapidia, heavy rains caused overflowing of streams, leading to extensive damage. Firefighters were called in to pump water out of homes.
Also, an “endless” lake formed in the plain of Peratata, in the area of the Monastery of Agios Andreas Milapidia, after the severe weather that hit Kefalonia. The heavy rainfall turned fields and roads into watery areas, while the fire brigade battled the waters that flooded yards and houses.

Access to Trapezaki beach has been cut off from both roads with one destroyed and the other turned into a torrent. The ground on the beach has receded, according to inkefalonia.gr.
Landslides occurred at Ammes Beach in Svoronata.
The closed roads in Kefalonia
Due to the weather conditions, the following sections of the Prefectural Roads remain closed:
The main roads of the Cephalonia are closed.
The section of Prefectural Road 2 (Venetian) specifically at the height of the old bridge (junction to Trapezaki), due to the damage to the road deck after the extreme weather conditions of the last two days. During this period, vehicles will be moving via the Prefectural Road 1 (Argostoli – Poros).
The last section of Prefectural Road 1, namely in the section Poros – Skala, due to the damage caused to the road deck at the “Limenia” location following the extreme weather conditions of the last two days. During this period, vehicles will be able to travel via Prefectural Roads 1 (Poros – Argostoli) and 12 (Platies – Skala).
Weather models are wrong
According to the director of EMY, there were very large deviations of the forecast models from the actual rainfall levels on the island. As Theodore Kolidas reports, on Thursday Meteo gave 93mm of rain and EMY gave 114mm. “The great persistence of the storm core and the strong rains continued to cause problems and several disasters on Friday, while new rainfall heights reached 81mm – again above the forecast – further worsening the situation,” he added.
