An inspection of the Old Port of Santorini was carried out this morning (17/2) by the president of the OASP, Eythymios Lekkas, at the height of the cable cart, as there is a risk of landslides.
As he told protothema.gr, about 1,000,000 tourists pass through this point and the aim is to have all the works that will be indicated by the beginning of April, in order to increase the level of safety of visitors.
“At the specific location of the old harbour is to control the instability of the slopes. About 1,000,000 tourists pass through here every year and of course the lower part of the harbour is visited by even more because of the approach of cruise ships. The aim is to check the instability of the slopes so that we can propose the necessary works and foundations to ensure an increased safety rate. We believe we will be able to do this by the end of March. By early April we should have all the works that we will recommend executed so that the degree of visitor safety is increased. The earthquakes that are happening are within the range we expect. They are earthquakes with fluctuations but they will become fewer as time passes and the average magnitude will slowly drop,” Lekkas told protothema.gr and added: “The noise that is heard along with the seismic tremors is the result of the diffusion of seismic waves on the surface, resulting in intense noises. Often in nearby earthquakes these noises can be heard very, very loudly. It is a normal phenomenon which is observed in many cases“.
