Katerini: Housekeeper “emptied” elderly woman’s savings- Over 150,000 euros stolen

Part of the stolen money was spent on purchasing a car, an electric vehicle, and various other goods from stores

A domestic worker has been accused of stealing from an elderly woman she was caring for, taking both cash and jewelry from her home as well as withdrawing large amounts from her bank account. In total, she is alleged to have stolen €150,000, which she “invested” in a car, an electric scooter, and various retail purchases.

The case was reported by the 77-year-old victim, who lives in Katerini, leading to the 44-year-old domestic worker being charged with theft and embezzlement.

According to the case file compiled by the Katerini Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit, between early 2024 and the present month, the 44-year-old suspect allegedly stole:

  • €17,000 in cash, along with jewelry and gold coins worth €6,500 from the elderly woman’s home.
  • Additionally, she is accused of embezzling €132,000 from the victim’s bank account, using a debit card that had been entrusted to her to cover the elderly woman’s essential living expenses.

“Part of the stolen money was spent on purchasing a car, an electric vehicle, and various other goods from stores,” the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) stated in an official announcement.

During a search of the suspect’s home, authorities recovered:

  • €28,970 in cash,
  • part of the stolen jewelry,
  • a bank card registered in the elderly victim’s name, which will be returned to its rightful owner.

Meanwhile, outside the suspect’s residence, police discovered and confiscated the stolen vehicles.

Legal Proceedings

The case file against the 44-year-old suspect has been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of First Instance of Katerini for further legal action.
