With the cold invasion underway, snowfall has already occurred in several cities and surrounding villages in Northern Greece, such as Florina, Kozani, Ptolemaida, Orestiada and even in the suburbs of Thessaloniki.
The phenomena will continue with less intensity in the coming days and will mainly affect the Central, Eastern and Southern parts, while the mercury will be lower than normal for the season, with frost appearing strong in the morning and night hours in mountainous areas of Central and Northern Greece. Strong to gusty winds will blow in the Aegean Sea.
According to OPEN’s meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis, “from today the phenomena will be limited to the south, but the cold will persist especially at night and in the morning. From Thursday onwards, spring returns with forecasts want the Holy Week to flow with high temperatures and mild weather conditions with this trend to be maintained until Easter”.
Rain and snowfall in many parts of the country – More than 40mm in Samos
Remarkable rain and snowfall occurred on Monday 07/04 in many areas of the country. The highest amount of rain until the afternoon was recorded on the island of Samos (Samos station – 43 mm, Karlovassi station – 42 mm). This was followed by Messi Naxos with 35 mm of rain.
The relevant table shows the 8 stations of the meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens network of automatic weather stations that recorded the highest precipitation (rainfall/snowfall) until the afternoon of Monday 07/04.
Today’s weather
Initially, clouds are expected on the mainland, in the Ionian Sea and in the Central and Southern Aegean, which will gradually decrease in the central and southern mainland, in the Southern Ionian Sea and in the Southern Aegean. As for the phenomena, temporary, local snowfall will occur mainly in Western Macedonia and in mountainous areas of the rest of the mainland, mainly in Central Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus and Sterea. Occasional, local rain is expected in lower altitude areas of the above mentioned parts of the country, in the Southern Ionian Sea, the Dodecanese and Crete.
The temperature in Western Macedonia will range from -6 to 7 degrees Celsius, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from -2 to 13, in Thessaly from 3 to 13, in Epirus from 0 to 15, in Sterea and Peloponnese from 2 to 15, in the Ionian islands from 5 to 14, in the North and East Aegean islands from 5 to 13, in the Cyclades from 8 to 14, in the Dodecanese from 11 to 16 and in Crete from 8 to 16 degrees Celsius. It is noted that the minimum in Crete and the Dodecanese is expected towards the end of the day.
Winds in the Aegean Sea will blow from northern directions from 4 to 6 Beaufort. In the Ionian Sea the winds will initially blow from eastern directions from 3 to 5 Beaufort, but from noon onwards they will shift to northerly winds of the same intensity.
In Attica clouds are expected. Winds will blow from the north from 2 to 4 Beaufort. The temperature in the center of Athens will range from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius.
In the prefecture of Thessaloniki clouds are expected until noon. Occasional, light rainfall, and in the mountains of the prefecture snowfall, will occur until the morning. Winds will blow from variable directions up to 3 Beaufort. The temperature in the center of Thessaloniki will range from 6 to 13 degrees Celsius.
The weather on Wednesday (09/04)
In the central and southern parts of the country increasing cloudiness with local rain and isolated thunderstorms mainly in the Peloponnese and from midday in Crete. The phenomena will stop in the evening. In the north, a few clouds in places, increasing in the midday hours. Occasional snowfall will occur in the mountains of Central Greece, the Peloponnese and Crete.
Winds will blow north-northwest 4 to 6 Beaufort and from the afternoon in the southeast locally 7 Beaufort.
From the north to south-east and from the south to south-east it will be pleasantly windy and north-western in the north-eastern direction.
The temperature will remain low for the season and will reach 12 to 13 degrees Celsius in the north and 15 to 16 degrees Celsius in the rest of the country. Frost will occur in the morning and evening hours in Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus.

A few clouds, partly cloudy, mainly in the midday and afternoon hours, when local rain or rain will occur in the mainland and Crete.
Winds will blow from the north 3 to 5 and in the sea locally 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change significantly.
