Exarchia battlefield: Huge property damage, cars burned (photos)

Clashes broke out for another night in the Exarchia area shortly after midnight on Saturday between a group of unidentified men and police forces.

The incidents took place near the Kallidromio Police Station, when a group of 50 unidentified people leaving a concert held on Strfis Hill attacked police forces with Molotov cocktails and stones, who responded by making extensive use of chemicals and throwing flash-bang grenades in order to remove the youths.

For about an hour, the area resembled a battlefield between the unidentified men who set up barricades in Kallidromiou and the surrounding alleys, followed by street fighting with police forces.

According to information so far, 11 cars and one motorbike were burnt to the ground in the clashes. Authorities began evacuating homes near the scene because of the smoke, and operated on one of the houses whose ground floor had caught fire. Among the property damage, dozens of garbage cans are estimated. Seventy-two people were brought in.
