AADE: Annual report for 2024 – Revenues exceed €71 billion, refunds top €8 billion

Key initiatives included linking cash registers with POS systems, leveraging myDATA data, and targeted audits – “In 2024, we strengthened compliance and harnessed new technologies,” noted George Pitsilis

Newsroom April 17 04:07

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has published its Annual Report for the year 2024, presenting significant outcomes in its core mission pillars, including securing public revenue, enhancing compliance, combating tax evasion and smuggling, and upgrading services to citizens and businesses.

According to the report, a broad spectrum of digital, organizational, and operational actions were implemented, substantially improving effectiveness and producing measurable results.

Key interventions—such as the interconnection of cash registers with POS terminals, utilization of myDATA data, and targeted inspections—contributed to higher levels of compliance. As a result, total collected revenues reached €71.3 billion, surpassing the annual target by €6.3 billion, while tax refunds exceeded €8 billion.

Additional Highlights:

  • 1,706 businesses that submitted zero VAT returns for 2023, despite ongoing activity, were identified. After AADE’s intervention, they corrected their returns, reporting an additional €60.9 million in outputs.
  • For 2022, 999 businesses with zero VAT declarations were found non-compliant through cross-referencing with myDATA and subsequently submitted declarations totaling €46.7 million.
  • Another 1,423 legal entities that had filed no return at all for 2022 were compelled to comply, declaring taxes amounting to €14.8 million.

Customs and Anti-Smuggling Efforts:

  • Over 109,000 inspections were carried out using modern risk analysis and data management tools for tracking inflows and outflows.
  • At Piraeus’ 3rd Customs Office, narcotics worth over €7 million were confiscated.
  • 122,000 lab inspections and sample tests were conducted on energy and alcohol products, food, and water, reinforcing public health and environmental protection.

Citizen and Business Services:

Digital transformation and service centralization produced strong outcomes:

  • The online platform “My Requests” handled over 2.5 million submissions.
  • Issued: 930,805 Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) and 395,079 personal access codes.
  • Scheduled: 91,161 appointments at tax offices and customs services.

Statement from AADE Governor George Pitsilis:

“In 2024, we strengthened compliance, leveraged new technologies, upgraded our services, and stood by citizens and businesses.
Guided by our 2024 results and fully aware of the challenges ahead, we continue to carry out our mission with consistency and dedication.”
