New York Times: Trump prevented Israel from bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities in May

The US President has reportedly chosen the route of negotiations with Tehran

Newsroom April 17 02:41

US President Donald Trump is reported to have rejected a plan for aerial bombing by Israel against Iran and suggested that he was considering opening negotiations to strike a deal with Tehran to curb the country’s nuclear energy program, the New York Times, citing sources in his government and other sources, the New York Times reported yesterday (Wednesday).

According to the report, Israel had drawn up plans that called for air bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities in May, with the aim of preventing the Islamic Republic from being able to develop nuclear weapons for at least a year, if not longer.

According to the report, the plan would require the assistance of the US to implement the plan, not only to defend Israel from Iranian retaliation, but also to guarantee the success of the project.

After months of internal discussions, Trump has reportedly decided to pursue negotiations between Washington and Tehran and not to pursue the military option.

The US and Iran, which have not had diplomatic relations since 1980, held indirect talks in the Sultanate of Oman on Saturday for the first time under the Trump administration – the previous (2017-2021) or the current one. Both sides described the talks as “positive” and “constructive”. They are expected to resume the day after Saturday, either in Rome, according to Western sources, or again in Muscat, according to Tehran.
