Nia Vardalos on her decision to speak publicly about adopting her daughter: “I wanted to help others”

"I think it was very important for me to say it," the actress confessed

Newsroom April 25 11:00

In her book “And Suddenly Mom,” published nearly ten years ago, Nia Vardalos shared her feelings about adopting her daughter, Ilaria. Reflecting on her choice to publicly discuss motherhood, the actress and author described how she wrote something deeply personal for the first time, revealing an experience she had kept private in hopes that her confession could help others.

In a detailed interview on the show “Happy Day,” aired on Friday, April 25, she stated: “It was the first time I wrote something so deeply from within, a part of me that I didn’t want to show. I thought it was really important to express that if I went through this, maybe it could help others.”

Regarding her relationship with her daughter, Vardalos emphasized their strong bond and their frequent visits to Greece. She also noted that she keeps her daughter away from the limelight so that she can have a normal life. As she confessed, “We have a wonderful relationship. We often come to Greece; she speaks Greek, unfortunately with my accent, but we’ll see what happens. I’ve kept her away from my work; she doesn’t come to my premieres very often. I think it’s good for her to have a normal life.”
