Four individuals have been arrested regarding the incident. Both the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) and the shipping company managing the vessel have issued statements, while Minister of Shipping Vassilis Kikilias expressed his condolences for the death of the 47-year-old.
The brother of the 47-year-old mariner addressed the tragic accident in which she was struck by a truck during the unloading of a ship from Italy in the port of Patras while speaking on the show Live News.
“She had just disembarked from the ship. After leaving, the company informed me that a truck rolled down and struck her. She was coming out; she had spent the night, they were doing some work, cleaning up some cabins, finishing their tasks… Giota was leaving; I was told that at the ramp – I don’t know where, at what point – the truck hit her,” the brother recounted.
The 47-year-old sailor had previously worked in a supermarket and had taken a job on the ship about a year ago for better financial compensation.
“The point is that my sister died unjustly, alright. And he is living and thriving,” the sailor’s brother stated.
“My mother has also suffered from heart issues, including an acute myocardial infarction, and we were in the hospital. Now she is relatively well. She found out in the morning, she had to learn it. Around 2 PM, they contacted her from the company,” he concluded.
The 47-year-old woman was on the ship’s ramp when it docked in the port of Patras, arriving from Venice in the early hours of the morning, during the unloading of unattended trucks. Under circumstances currently under investigation by the Coast Guard, the tractor that had entered the ship to pick up the cargo reversed and struck her, resulting in her death.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident and are expected to be brought before a prosecutor within the day.
The administration of the Patras Labor Center has declared a 24-hour strike at the port starting from 7 PM today, while a protest gathering will take place at 6:30 PM. Statements regarding the accident have been issued by the PNO and the shipping company, while Minister of Shipping Vassilis Kikilias extended his condolences for the death of the 47-year-old.
