Jonas Gutierrez, the iconic former Newcastle player, surprised passersby in the city center by playing guitar and singing near Grey’s Monument. The 41-year-old Argentine, who retired from football in 2021, expressed his boundless love for the city and the club, describing his experience as “a dream come true.”

From the Stadium to… Guitar
Gutierrez, who spent seven years at Newcastle (2008-2015) after transferring from Mallorca, made history wearing the “Magpies” jersey. In 205 appearances, he scored 12 goals, with the most memorable one coming in his last match for the team in 2015. His goal against West Ham in the final match of the 2014/15 season secured Newcastle’s stay in the Premier League, earning him a place in fans’ hearts.
However, his career was not without difficulties. In 2012, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and underwent surgery to remove one testicle. Despite his health ordeal, Gutierrez returned stronger and continued to play, inspiring others with his resilience and passion.
“My City, My Home”
The Argentine posted a video on Instagram, showing himself playing guitar and singing in the center of Newcastle, near the iconic Grey’s Monument. In the caption, he wrote: “My city, my home. I am a Geordie, I love this city, I love these people. Thank you for everything, Newcastle — a dream come true playing guitar at the Monument.”
This gesture sparked a wave of enthusiasm among fans, flooding the comments with messages of love. One supporter wrote, “Once a Geordie, always a Geordie,” while another recalled: “Almost 10 years have passed since that goal against West Ham. We will never forget.” A third added, “You don’t see a Newcastle legend playing guitar on the street every day.”
Gutierrez’s Legacy
Gutierrez, who wore the Argentina national team jersey 22 times (2007-2011), continued his career after Newcastle with teams such as Deportivo La Coruña, Independiente, Banfield, and Málaga.
