The Regional Governor of Attica, Hydra, Nikos Chardalias, was at Nikos Chardalias, as part of his tours to all 66 municipalities of Attica, where he had a working meeting with the Mayor, Giorgos Koukoudakis, in order to sign the programmatic contract for the protection of the slopes of Avlaki beach on the island.
“We signed today with the Mayor the programmatic contract for Avlaki, one of the most popular and beautiful beaches of the island, which, with the completion of the project, will be delivered completely safe to residents and visitors,” said Mr. Chardalias.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome to Hydra our good friend, the experienced in the field Nikos Chardalias, whose presence is a great honor for our island. The Prefect of Attica came here to work, to listen to our problems, to give solutions, and to support our struggles. We thank him from the bottom of our hearts, and the best is ahead of us,” Koukoudakis said.
This project, budgeted 393,534 euros from the resources of Attica Region, aims to address the landslides, which have been observed on the beach of Avlaki due to the morphology of the soil, to achieve safe access and stay of visitors in the area, while according to the contract the project is expected to be completed by mid-2028.
Discussions on new schools, waste management, and sewer system
The focus of the working meeting, which was held at the City Hall of Hydra, also discussed the projects that are in progress or in the process of implementation with funding from the Region of Attica, as well as the additional prioritization – in close cooperation with the municipal authority – of projects and interventions that the local community of Hydra needs.
As Mr.Chardalias pointed out, “the Region of Attica, in the context of the holistic strategy for the implementation of 281 projects of major importance until the end of 2028, will allocate a budget of 10.9 million euros, to launch interventions that will satisfy chronic demands of the residents of Hydra”.
Among the planned projects stand out the repair and rehabilitation of school facilities, the construction of a heliport with road access, interventions to strengthen slopes, the completion of the sewerage network, as well as holistic water and urban wastewater management projects.
Immediately after the meeting, the Regional Governor and the Mayor visited the Sachtourio bequest, where a preschool station is being created, financed by the Region of Attica with the amount of 431,520 euros.
The implementation of the project will cover a very important gap in Hydra, as there is currently no nursery on the island, which causes significant difficulties for working parents of infants and toddlers.
During the renovation of the listed building, all its special architectural and artistic features will be preserved and highlighted.
Subsequently, Mr. Chardalias visited the Wastewater Treatment Facilities of Hydra, a key project for the upgrading of everyday life and the service of residents and visitors, which is funded by the Region of Attica with a budget of 10 million euros from the resources of the Sectoral Programmes.
The project, which is at an advanced stage of implementation, completes the treatment system and the sewerage network of Hydra, in order to achieve integrated management, i.e., the collection, transport, treatment, and disposal of urban wastewater of the island.
“Our presence in Hydra today reflects the intention of the regional authority, as well as my will, to provide one of the most cosmopolitan islands in the Mediterranean with the infrastructure that the residents and the thousands of visitors from all over the world need.
The municipal wastewater treatment facilities with the most modern standards, the creation of a functional and fully accessible heliport, which will ensure the uninterrupted connection of the island throughout the year, as well as the creation of modern educational units, is our obvious and practical response to the needs and requirements of the place”,
The Regional Governor spoke warmly of the excellent and efficient cooperation with the Mayor, noting that by the autumn, additional interventions will have been prioritized and additional interventions, in order to have a small inclusion of additional projects from new funding sources claimed by the Region.
“This will be the last substantial inclusion of projects so that after this, at the end of 2028, we can look citizens in the eyes and say: these we committed, these we have progressed, these we have done,” said Mr. Hardalias.
“This is what we have done,” he said.
Completing his tour in Hydra, the Regional Governor also visited the Fire Station of the island, where he spoke with officers and firefighters about the special conditions they face in the middle of the fire season.
Mr. Chardalias was accompanied by the Special Secretary of the Region of Attica, Elena Rapti, the President of “New Metropolitan Attica S.A.,” Dimitris Fragakis, and the Director of the Office of the Regional Governor, George Chalkias. On the part of the Municipality, the Deputy Mayors of Culture, Mary Katsika, and Legal Affairs & Planning, Georgia Marangou, were present.
