London and Skopje sign a strategic cooperation agreement on defence and security within NATO

A previous agreement in May allowed North Macedonia to borrow up to €6 billion with a UK government guarantee

Newsroom July 17 08:20

North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Timčo Mucunski and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy signed today in London a “Strategic Cooperation Declaration” between North Macedonia and the United Kingdom.

Mucunski stated that the declaration marks a new chapter in bilateral relations and strengthens the partnership with the UK.

“A meeting of historic importance, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two countries, during which we signed the Strategic Cooperation Declaration. The Declaration will enhance and advance strategic relations between the two states, including cooperation in foreign policy, security, and defense — particularly within the NATO framework. We also discussed the recent intergovernmental (economic) agreement, which will boost trade, stimulate economic growth, and support the implementation of various infrastructure projects. We further discussed our alliance within NATO and our collaboration in multilateral organizations,” Mucunski posted on social media.

It is noted that last May, representatives from both governments signed an intergovernmental economic cooperation agreement in London, focused on implementing investment projects in North Macedonia.

Under that agreement, North Macedonia is allowed to borrow up to €6 billion (GBP £5 billion) from financial markets, backed by a UK government guarantee.
