The 15th of August is not merely a major religious holiday. It is a day deeply rooted in the soul of the region. In the Municipality of Meteora, locals return to their villages, ancestral homes, and churches to venerate the Virgin Mary and reconnect with family, heritage, and tradition. From the plains to the mountain villages, church bells ring joyfully, and town squares fill with voices, songs, and smiles.

The wider Kalambaka area is home to numerous sacred sites dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, giving these days a profound spiritual significance. A highlight is the ancient Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Kalambaka, where, on the eve of the feast, a solemn vespers service is held with the chanting of the Virgin Mary’s Lamentations before her flower-adorned bier.
