Mitsotakis on arsonists: The era of impunity is over – No one can play with the lives and property of our fellow citizens

The Prime Minister emphasized that over 300 arrests for forest arson have already been made this year and sent a stern warning to offenders:
“The State will not allow anyone to play with the lives and the property of our fellow citizens. Nor, of course, with the country’s precious natural environment. Impunity ends here.”

In detail, Mr. Mitsotakis stated:
“Did you know that this year more than 300 arrests have been made for forest arson? In the past, we saw arsonists being arrested only to get off lightly due to unjustifiably lenient penalties. That has now changed. Thanks to the amendments we made to the Penal Code, all sentences relating to forest arson are now served in prison. In other words, they are neither suspended nor converted in any way. They are accompanied by heavy fines and confiscation of property. The arrests, confessions, and pre-trial detentions of the past week have proven that, unfortunately, our opponent is not only the climate crisis. It is also the human factor—whether through negligence or intent. The State will not allow anyone to play with the lives and the property of our fellow citizens. Nor, of course, with the country’s precious natural environment. Impunity ends here.”
