A tragic event occurred on Wednesday afternoon (3/9) on Skra Street in Patissia, when a 34-year-old woman lost her life while trying to deliver her baby.

Her two minor children, aged 3 and 5, were in the house, and when her husband entered, he found her dead with her dead infant and alerted authorities. Officers who arrived at the scene found that she had breathed her last, with the umbilical cord still attached to her.

According to the initial assessment of the coroner, who rushed to the scene, the 34-year-old woman’s death appears to be due to pathological causes; however, safe conclusions will be drawn after the forensic examination is completed. The woman was expecting to give birth in the next few days; however, something happened, and she gave birth prematurely.

Husband: “I came home and found her dead. I didn’t see any scissors.”

Her husband, originally from Georgia, told authorities he was worried when he could not locate her as her mobile phone was switched off. When he returned to their home in Patisia, he saw his wife and newborn on the living room floor, unconscious.

He, with the help of a neighbor, tried to revive his wife by giving her CPR, to no avail.

“I was not at home. I came home from work. The two kids came towards me, and I found her dead. I didn’t see any scissors,” her husband told protothema.gr.

“In the house, she had given birth to the other two children”.

A cook for the woman said, “She was a remarkable person. I had met her at the supermarket. She shouldn’t have been left home alone while she was pregnant. I’m so sorry. I heard about it on TV, and her brother told me. She was in her month to give birth. The husband, as far as I know, was working. I was told by her brother that she cut the umbilical cord herself.”

Meanwhile, according to testimonies from neighbours, which have not been confirmed by the mother’s entourage, the woman reportedly gave birth to her other two children at home.

What the relatives and the 5-year-old child told police

Relatives of the 34-year-old woman were at the scene and reportedly told police that the family was against doctors, but they did not know if the woman had visited a gynaecologist during the pregnancy to determine the possible date of birth would be.

The 5-year-old child, who was at home at the time of the tragedy with his 3-year-old sibling, has told authorities that his mother was bleeding and then the baby was born. He and his mum then took the newborn to the bathroom to clean it, while the child confirmed that the father was away from home and then came to the apartment.

Authorities are investigating the case and the coroner will provide more answers as to what exactly happened in the apartment, but the scenario of foul play is being ruled out.
