In response to a question from Proto Thema journalist Christos Bokas about the timeline for the implementation of new measures and rising food prices affecting Greek households, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that “for the first time, there is a bold scaling of tax reductions based on the number of children,” adding that “employees will see it reflected in their first January paycheck.” He also highlighted that the new tax relief package “gives us an opportunity to reconnect with the younger generation,” stressing the government’s goal of helping young people enter the labor market earlier.

Regarding product prices, Mitsotakis acknowledged the ongoing cost-of-living challenges, stating, “I know very well what it’s like to raise two or three children,” and underscored that “our main focus is supporting household income.” He clarified that the aim is to increase “what remains in the household after taxation,” which will be a significant benefit. “This is the best answer to the cost-of-living issue, though not the only one,” he added, noting that addressing inflation goes beyond simply boosting disposable income.

The Prime Minister also referred to interventions to ease costs in energy, rent, and other areas, saying, “What we’re doing is putting more money back in households’ pockets.” Mitsotakis confirmed that Greeks will see the impact from January 1st and reminded that new measures worth €1.5 billion will come into effect from 2024. “All tenants will receive one month’s rent back at the end of November, and pensioners will receive €250 at the same time,” he concluded.
