Giannis Antetokounmpo’s family now permanently in Athens – His children started kindergarten at Athens College

In a relatively quiet neighborhood of Palaio Psychiko, those who pass daily by an impressive, futuristic apartment building—without being local residents—may not know that this is the home of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s family

Newsroom October 6 10:55

What they also don’t know is that the Milwaukee Bucks star has now permanently settled his family in Greece. From this year onward, his wife Mariah and their four children — 5-year-old Liam-Charles, 4-year-old Maverick-Shai, 2-year-old Eva-Brooke, and 4-month-old Aria-Capri — will live in Athens for the next several years.

It was a decision made this year, and as the Greek Freak revealed in an extensive interview, when he asked Mariah whether she preferred Milwaukee or Athens as their main residence, her answer was immediate — the Greek capital easily won. The discussion about a permanent move had already taken place in previous months with his brothers, mother, and close friends.

Liam and Maverick at Kindergarten

One big change in the Antetokounmpo family’s daily life is that since early September, Giannis and Mariah’s two sons have started kindergarten. Every morning, 5-year-old Liam and 4-year-old Maverick go to Athens College.

The choice of Athens College was no coincidence — the 30-year-old basketball player wanted only the best for his sons from their very first school years. His decision to have them attend school in Greece reflects his deep love for the country where he grew up, something that was evident when he teared up celebrating Greece’s bronze medal in the European Basketball Championship — a trophy he called the most precious of his career.

Giannis is already in Milwaukee, as the Bucks’ NBA games begin Tuesday. While in Athens, he trained daily and intensively at OAKA before returning to the U.S. Over the summer, he relaxed at his villa in Costa Navarino and enjoyed some quiet nights out in Athens before joining the national team.

“Chaos” at the Fish Tavern

One issue he will face when he eventually returns to live in Greece — as he said in a recent interview, within six years if the right conditions arise — is how to handle the crowds when he goes out with his family.
During his last public outing at the fish tavern Nisiotissa in Vrilissia, dozens of people started filming him with their phones the moment he sat down with Mariah and their children. Everyone wanted a photo, creating a small commotion. Giannis didn’t refuse anyone, but the scene showed the level of his extraordinary popularity — the kind that makes a simple family meal turn into a public spectacle.
Some patrons even climbed on chairs to get a better view, while Giannis remained calm, aware that such attention is now part of his life. For that reason, although he loves Athens and the Riviera, he prefers the safety and privacy of his modern home.

Home and America

The Psychiko residence, purchased in 2023, gives Giannis a home base in Athens for himself, his brothers, and their mother. He and Mariah live in the penthouse, while other family members have apartments in the same building. According to reports, his mother will follow him to Milwaukee soon.
Friends close to Giannis say it won’t be easy for him to leave his wife and kids behind — this is the first time he’s had to do so. The family prefers Athens’ climate to Milwaukee’s cold, where even July temperatures rarely exceed 26°C.

Giannis will keep in touch with daily FaceTime calls, and depending on the NBA schedule, his family will travel to the U.S. for visits. Mariah and the kids will spend Christmas with him in America and then return to their “new Greek reality,” waiting for his visits home whenever possible.

Future Plans

Many believe that within five or six years, Giannis will want to leave the NBA — if the right European contract appears — to return to Greece.
In October 2023, the Bucks extended his contract through 2026–27, worth €158,432,754 (€39.6 million per year). No European team can match such figures, and Giannis knows that, though by that age he will be near the twilight of his career.

Business in Greece

Despite his admiration for LeBron James, Giannis has said he doesn’t plan to play basketball until 40. He dreams of ending his career in Greece — where it all began, where his family now lives, and where he is increasingly active in business.

Beyond his properties in Psychiko and Costa Navarino, his Greek investments are expanding. He recently partnered with Elias Georgiadis to acquire Village Shopping & More mall in Renti through Premia Properties. He also holds a 10% stake in Hellenic Wineries and, this year, acquired Semeli Estate winery.

His ventures in Greece include AntetokounBros retail stores (at Athens Airport, Ermou Street, and Milwaukee), as well as restaurant and investment projects abroad — from the Greek taverna Avli in the U.S. to “green” funds with Greek-American billionaire John Calamos, and various startups in health, nutrition, and luxury goods.

All are managed under Ante Inc., the company founded by the boy who grew up in Sepolia, rose to global stardom, and still carries Greece in his heart.
