Two new domestic cases of West Nile virus infection were diagnosed and reported over the past week, according to the latest epidemiological report from EODY.
Since the beginning of the 2025 season, and up to October 8, a total of 93 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and investigated in Greece.
Of these, 75 cases showed Central Nervous System (CNS) manifestations (such as encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis), while 18 cases had mild symptoms or no CNS involvement.
So far, during the 2025 season, 8 deaths have been recorded in patients over 65 years old with CNS-related manifestations of the virus.
To date, cases have been recorded and investigated in 41 municipalities across 23 Regional/Metropolitan Units, specifically in:
- West Attica
- Western Sector of Athens
- Piraeus
- Islands
- East Attica
- Central Athens Sector
- Northern Athens Sector
- Ilia
- Achaia
- Aetolia-Acarnania
- Evros
- Larissa
- Karditsa
- Trikala
- Arta
- Pella
- Imathia
- Thessaloniki
- Euboea
- Corinthia
- Messinia
- Heraklion
- Lefkada
The diagnosis of additional cases is considered likely and expected in the coming period.
