The Norwegian Nobel committee, which awards the eponymous prize for peace, held its last meeting on Monday, the Nobel Institute said today, a day before the 2025 winner is announced.
The timing suggests that the winner’s name was chosen long before the agreement between Israel and Hamas, which was reached under strong pressure from Donald Trump, who openly covets the Nobel Peace Prize.
Israel and the Islamist group today reached an agreement on a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages, a key step in ending two years of devastating war in Palestinian territory.
“The last meeting of the Nobel committee took place on Monday,” Erik Osheim, a spokesman for the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told the French news agency.
The five-member Nobel committee generally makes its decision several days or even weeks before the official announcement, and meets one last time in the home stretch before the announcement.
“The final steps were taken on Monday, but we never say when the Nobel committee makes its decision,” Osheim said.
No new committee meeting is planned before the winner’s name is revealed tomorrow at 12.00 noon GMT, according to him.
“There will be a winner this year,” he said, as some experts speculate that there is a possibility that the Nobel committee, due to the deteriorating geopolitical situation, may not have a prize left.
Claiming a role in resolving many conflicts, Donald Trump has insisted since returning to the White House in January that he “deserves” the Nobel.
Not to give it to him would be an “insult” to the US, he said recently.
The agreement between Israel and Hamas “has absolutely no impact” on the selection of the 2025 winner because “the Nobel committee has already made its decision,” historian Asle Sveen, a Nobel expert, commented to Agence France-Presse.
“Trump will not get the prize this year. I’m 100 percent sure of that,” he said, stressing that the US president has long “let Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu go free” to bomb Gaza and provided significant military aid to the Israeli army.
This year, 338 individuals and organizations have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, which last year was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, a movement of survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
