A “bombshell” hit the Euroleague world on the morning of Thursday, October 23, as 39-year-old referee Uroš Nikolić, who officiates games in the European basketball league, was arrested.
Nikolić, a referee in both the Euroleague and the ABA Liga, was taken into custody after local police reportedly discovered €250,000 in his apartment. The news was first reported by Serbian state television RTS and Blic on Thursday morning.
According to Blic, Nikolić is suspected of being part of a criminal organization that was broken up in the last few hours by Serbian authorities. Police are currently investigating the origin of the €250,000 found in his apartment.
The Serbian referee had officiated at the Final Four in Abu Dhabi, and this season he has refereed Panathinaikos vs. Bayern Munich and Olympiacos vs. Real Madrid.
Serbian media report that members of the criminal organization — whose leaders are already in prison — are being investigated for serious crimes, including two murders and three attempted murders.
