The Hellenic Police (ELAS) has been placed on new alert ahead of today’s funeral of 39 year old Fanouris Kargakis who was killed in the gunfire exchange on Saturday morning in Vorizia, Crete.
What worries authorities is that the funeral – contrary to the initial picture – will take place in an “open circle”, something that raises the “temperature” for possible incidents.
According to the autopsy, the 39 year old was hit by two different weapons, receiving four hits by rounds of two different calibers, resulting in injuries to the left leg, a through-and-through wound in the left shoulder, a wound in the left thoracic area and a wound in the coccyx.
As ELAS announced, the case file for what happened in Vorizia includes six people among whom the 39 year old deceased, the two injured (25 and 30 years old) who remain hospitalized under guard and were arrested on Sunday, while three more people are being sought (19, 25 and 29 years old) who are siblings of one of the arrestees.
The two injured – the 25 year old brother of the 27 year old owner of the house where the explosion occurred that started the bloody vendetta, as well as another resident of the village – are accused of intentional homicide and attempted homicide serially for the murder of Fanouris Kargakis.
However, as ELAS spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidu stated on ERT, police consider it certain that other people from both families are also involved, but there are no specific testimonies so far. For this reason investigations are in full progress not only in the village but also in other areas that could be used as hideouts.
At the same time it is revealed that among the accused but also among the victims in the bloody clash there are also members of a third family which however has blood relation to one of the two main involved families. Members of this third family had been central years ago in mobilizations of Cretan farmers and livestock breeders in Athens.
Residents are asking for justice to be served and for who placed the explosive device to be revealed, because that is where everything started from. They believe that only then will tempers calm and a new circle of blood be avoided. As they stress, there are witnesses who can talk, if they only feel safe. “Everyone knows, but nobody speaks” says an elderly man who has lived through the old vendettas.
